Riff is the forum for bedroom producers, gigging session players, and conservatory dropouts. Post your demo. Ask the question. Find your people.
Isolation is the silent killer of musical growth. You can't hear your own blind spots. You need people who've been exactly where you are.
Three musicians. Three problems. Five replies each.
This is what it looks like when you post something honest at 2 AM and wake up to people who actually know the answer.
"I've been playing for three years and I genuinely cannot tell if I'm getting better anymore. Same pentatonic boxes, same three chord progressions. I practice every day but nothing feels new. Is this just what intermediate feels like forever?"
Been playing 3 years, hit a wall — is this just what intermediate feels like?
Classic CAGED plateau. The pentatonic box trap is real — you've memorized shapes instead of the notes. Try learning one song completely by ear. Not tabs. Ear. Your brain will rewire in about two weeks.
What helped me break out: transcribing solos in different keys. Take something you already know and move it. Forces you to actually understand the intervals.
Also — record yourself. Painful but necessary. You'll hear exactly what's stale. The plateau is usually in your ear, not your fingers.
Three years is exactly when the beginner dopamine runs out and the real work starts. This is normal. You haven't plateaued — you've just run out of easy wins.
Teach someone else. Seriously. Find a total beginner and show them what you know. Nothing exposes your gaps faster than trying to explain something out loud.
The room is already full. And talking.
These are real threads from the last few hours. Newest posts first. This is what you're walking into.
Finally understand tritone substitution after 2 years of confusion
The penny dropped when I stopped thinking about it as a substitution and started thinking about shared chord tones…
Rough 2 AM recording — be honest, is the chorus too busy?
Bedroom session, no mixing, just the raw idea. Something feels off in the transition but I can't hear it anymore…
Learning 30 songs in 5 days — anyone done this? What's the strategy?
First cover band gig came up faster than expected. I have the chord charts. I just need a system…
Baritone guitar for jazz — stupid idea or underrated?
Picked up a cheap Squier Baritone and started running it through jazz changes. The low tension is doing something…
Sidechain compression finally clicked — here's what made it make sense
It's not about the kick ducking the bass. It's about creating space in a frequency that doesn't exist yet…
Can't sing back intervals above a minor 6th — is this a fundamental ceiling?
I can nail a P5 every time but anything wider than that and my brain just hears "big". Solfège hasn't fixed it…
What it feels like to find your room.
I posted a rough demo at 1 AM expecting nothing. By morning I had eight replies, two of them from people who’d solved the exact same arrangement problem. I cried a little.
Someone on here transcribed the same Coltrane passage I’d been stuck on for three weeks. Didn’t just post the notes — explained why McCoy voiced it that way. I’ve never learned faster.
I hadn't talked to another musician in four months. Posted here once. Now I have four people I message almost every day about music. It sounds small. It isn't.
